April Newsletter

Welcome to the April newsletter which has a very strong focus on Earth Day. Anyone who has seen or heard of the BBC's Blue Planet 2 series will be well aware of the impact that plastic is having on the wider environment. In response to this, part of our Earth Day programme will feature a talk by Maria Arceo, an artist and environmentalist whose latest line of work uses discarded plastic objects collected from various locations in the Thames.

To find out more about the many events and activities we have going on during Earth Day and how you can be involved, read on....

 News in Brief

  • Do you want to keep receiving this newsletter?  To stay on our mailing list, all you need to do is follow the instructions in an email we'll be sending out on Sunday 15th April. If you don't actively say that you want to stay on our list, you won't receive any more messages from us. Should you miss the email we send out, it's always possible to sign-up again via the website. In the menu on the right hand side of the home page look for a link which reads "Sign up for our email newsletters". Just follow the link and fill-in your details.
We are now using a double opt-in which, in English, means you'll receive an email asking you to confirm that you want to receive our emails. Thank you.
  • Limited edition! Look out for the stainless steel Samye Dzong London branded water bottles which are now available in our shop. Forget about single-use plastic bottles which pollute the planet for hundreds of years after you've finished with them, these stainless steel bottles should last for at least one lifetime!  Take your pick from our extensive range of colours (OK, it's either yellow or very dark blue).
  • Kagyu Samye Dzong London is looking for a full time cook. Radu, our excellent cook for more than four years, will be sorely missed when he finishes at the end of April. We are therefore looking for someone with experience in cooking vegetarian and vegan food for larger numbers to start soon. Anyone interested in this residential position, please contact the office for more information.
  • Lama Yeshe Rinpoche's teaching schedule is now on the Samye Ling website where you can see his dates
  • Dates for your diary:
We've added a few more courses to the website while you weren't looking including

1 - Earth Day at Samye Dzong London

As most of you know, Kagyu Samye Dzong London will host a free event to celebrate Earth Day on Sunday the 22 of April. The day will include a range of speakers, films, workshops and activities to inspire others to end plastic pollution and protect the environment.

In our previous Newsletter we profiled Satish Kumar as one of the speakers on the day. Here we introduce some of the other activities that will be happening on the day, and we will soon send out a Special Edition Newsletter with the detailed programme. We look forward to seeing you there!

Buddhism and the Environment

Buddhism has long been synonymous with living in harmony with nature. Lama Zangmo will talk about ethics, highlighting that acknowledgement of our interdependence are key to environmental protection. There will also be a special video message from Lama Yeshe Rinpoche.

The programme line-up also includes

The Effects of Humans on the Sea with Maria Arceo

Maria Arceo is an environmentalist and artist who will highlight the long-term impacts of plastic debris entering marine environments. Her latest line of art work utilises discarded plastic objects collected from various locations in the Thames.

Introduction to Permaculture with Kevin Mascarenhas

Kevin Mascarenhas will lead a workshop that will explore the founding principles of permaculture, its ethics, and where to start the journey when creating a more sustainable way of living. There will be some time at the end for a Q&A session as well.

Invitation to be involved on Earth Day

We would like you to be involved in the event, through your environmental curiosity, creativity and commitment!

Submit a Poem for Earth Day
We would like to invite you to help us celebrate Earth Day by sharing a poem about the environment at our Open Mic Poetry session. Submit a poem to be read out on the day or to be read out by yourself. Please email us one or several poems if you are happy for us to put them on our social media.

Make an Environmental Commitment
Please think about what environmental commitments you can make on the day to help protect the environment. Your promise will be featured on our public commitment board.

Ask a Question
Our panel of environmental experts will be ready to answer your questions and have a live discussion about environmental protection in a special Question and Answer session. Please email with your questions.

Bring your own cup or non-plastic water bottle
We invite you to bring your own mug, thermos or re-fillable non-plastic water bottle to Earth Day. If you do not have a water bottle, you can buy a KSD London Bottle on the day.

And last but not least

Other activities include a Green Exhibition space, kids activities and sun-watching (weather dependent).

More information will go up on the website as we get closer to the day.  We hope to see as many of you as possible.

a12 - Meditation and the transformation of stress - with Gelong Thubten

This course will explain how mindfulness, meditation and the development of compassion can help us make friends with stress, transforming it into food for spiritual growth. We will explore the root causes of both stress and happiness, as well as how to develop compassion and forgiveness. Through this we can learn how to relax into difficult situations so that they help us find deeper happiness and compassion for ourselves and others.

There will also be some information from neuroscience regarding the chemistry of stress in our brains and bodies, and research into the effects of meditation and its transformative power.

Gelong Thubten has considerable experience teaching these methods in companies, universities, schools, hospitals, prisons and social service organisations. He trains staff at the head offices of Google and Linkedin, as well as teaching meditation to medical students.

Meditation and the transformation of stress, with Gelong Thubten, 28th-29th April. Book your place now by clicking on the donate button at the bottom of the course page on the website.
