About the event

Foundation in Buddhism Series

This is the third of a series of teachings over the next 6 months, which will give an overview and understanding of the framework for the Buddhist path. It is intended for those who are new to Buddhism and will cover an explanation of the main topics, such as The Three Jewels - the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha; the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, the Four Thoughts; the meaning of Refuge, the Spiritual Friend and the importance of loving kindness and compassion. It is recommended to attend the full course, but each teaching stands on its own and it is possible to attend individual days.  Suitable for anyone wishing to gain more familiarity with the Buddhist teachings.

The Four Thoughts

This is a day of introduction to Buddhism through reflection on the four thoughts that turn the mind to the Dharma: the preciousness of our life; impermanence, karma and samsara.

The point of meditating on the meaning of our precious human birth is so that we make use of it and we don't waste it.

Meditating on impermanence inspires one to turn to the Dharma and increases ones’ ability to be diligent.

Karma, cause and effect should be considered in a broad way. As we are all interdependent, everything we do not only affects ourselves and people close to us, but has an effect on the wider world. It is important, therefore, to take responsibility for our actions.

Considering the defects of samsara, fundamentally all beings want to be happy; no one wants to suffer. However, when we ask ourselves what real happiness is, some of the things we wish for are counterproductive.

Buddhism defines true happiness as liberation from negative emotions, afflictions and mental obscurations.g

This day can be attended as a course on its own or as a part of the monthly Buddhism series. The day will also include time for Q&A and meditation.   Lunch will be available in our Tibetan Tearoom.

Please note that each day needs to be booked separately in advance.
