Foundation in Buddhism Series
This is the fifth of a series of teachings over the next 6 months, which will give an overview and understanding of the framework for the Buddhist path. It is intended for those who are new to Buddhism and will cover an explanation of the main topics, such as The Three Jewels - the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha; the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, the Four Thoughts; the meaning of Refuge, the Spiritual Friend and the importance of loving kindness and compassion. It is recommended to attend the full course, but each teaching stands on its own and it is possible to attend individual days. Suitable for anyone wishing to gain more familiarity with the Buddhist teachings.
The Spiritual Friend
We all need guidance on how to tame the mind and change our old negative habits and how to live according to ethics and the teachings. Therefore we need teachers and guides who can lead us along the path.
This course will cover topics such as the need for a spiritual teacher; the qualities needed in both the teacher and the student; the three types of Dharma person; the benefits of faith and devotion and the need for intelligent discernment on the spiritual path.
The Tibetan word for spiritual friend literally means “friend in goodness/virtue”. A spiritual friend can lead us on the path that will eliminate suffering and guide us onto the path of happiness and freedom from suffering.
There are five topics on a spiritual friend:
First is the reason why we need a spiritual friend.
Second are the different types of spiritual friends.
Third the characteristics of each type of spiritual friend.
Fourth, how we should relate to and rely on a spiritual friend.
Fifth, the benefits that come from relying on a spiritual friend.
This day can be attended as a course on its own or as a part of the monthly Buddhism series. The day will also include time for Q&A and meditation. Lunch will be available in our Tibetan Tearoom.
Please note that each day needs to be booked separately in advance.
